New South Wales bans lightweight shopping bags
1 June 2022
Members are advised from 1 June 2022, New South Wales banned the supply of thin plastic bags (35 microns or less) even those made from compostable plastics. The NSW Government has predicted the ban will prevent almost 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from entering the environment over the next 20 years.
Single-use plastic straws*, plates, bowls, and expanded polystyrene foodware will be banned from 1 November 2022. Members are advised to stop ordering banned items now and use up existing stock.
*Exemptions will apply for people with a disability or medical need.
